Design Practice Statement
Ans Bakker’s practice operates at the intersection of control and surrender, inspired by coastal landscapes where land and water continually reshape one another. Her handcrafted glass objects reflect on protection, vulnerability, and the evolving concept of safety in turbulent times.
The ongoing series A Safe Place (since 2022) examines notions of home, shelter, and human dignity. Through fractured surfaces and constructed patterns, the work connects personal memory with collective urgency, addressing resilience and the human need for sanctuary in a disordered world.
Inspired by nature and her landscaping.
Her beauty and vulnerability.
How we always want to push the landscape into a design that suits us.
Harvest from the earth to control or not.
My glass is a reflection of playing with control and surrender and find the right balance.
I try to express the fragility of the landscape. A unity with ourselves. As part of the landscape. We are the landscape. I want to give it something human, something tangible, something enlightening, something that calls for tenderness, for affection, for touch and for cherishing. Feelings that I also experience in the silence of the landscape. In the daily noise and fast-paced economy, I sometimes lose it, and can pick it up again through this work. I translate what I see and experience and try to do so as purely as possible.
